Roulette equipment: the complete buying guide

Roulette equipment: the complete buying guide

Categories : Buying guides

A spinning wheel, a ball rattling into the pockets, a croupier calling "No more bets": roulette is the fastest way to create a real casino atmosphere. But to make it work, you need a consistent set-up: a wheel suited to how you play, a layout that matches that wheel, a table of the right size, color chips, spare balls and a few croupier accessories. Between a €50 set for a night with friends and a 55 cm mahogany wheel on a 244 cm table, prices range from 1 to 100. This guide reviews every item, with figures, so you can equip your roulette table right the first time.

Roulette equipment: what you need to play

A complete roulette table is built on seven items. The first two are essential; the others make the difference between a board game and a real casino table.

  • The wheel: the centerpiece, and the item that sets your budget.
  • The roulette layout (mat): it carries the number grid and the betting areas. It must match the wheel (single or double zero).
  • The table: optional for playing at home, essential for events or a club.
  • Roulette chips: color chips, one color per player.
  • Balls: always keep a spare, in the same diameter as the original ball.
  • The rake: to collect losing bets without leaning over the table.
  • The marker (dolly): placed on the winning number during the payout.

French, English or American roulette: which game to choose?

Before choosing the equipment, choose the variant. It determines the wheel, the layout and the chips.

Criterion French roulette English roulette American roulette
Zero Single 0 (37 pockets) Single 0 (37 pockets) 0 and 00 (38 pockets)
House edge 2.7% 2.7% 5.26%
Layout Even-money bets on both sides of the grid Even-money bets on one side only Even-money bets on one side, 00 pocket
Chips Value chips (casino plaques and chips) Color chips, one color per player Color chips, one color per player
Pace Slow, ceremonial Fast Fast
Best for Traditional casino atmosphere Home casino, events, themed parties Las Vegas theme

In Europe, the vast majority of games are played on a single-zero wheel, with a French or English layout. American roulette makes sense for a Las Vegas-themed night. Golden rule: a double-zero wheel with a single-zero layout (or the reverse) means a pocket that can never be played. Buy both together.

Choosing your roulette wheel

A wheel is chosen on three criteria: diameter, material and center (spindle). The larger the diameter, the more stable the spin and the more visible the wheel from a distance. A wooden wheel with a metal center spins longer and more evenly than a plastic one.

40 cm roulette sets: to discover the game

A 40 cm plastic wheel supplied with a layout, chips, a ball and cards: the most affordable option for a first game night or a gift. The Single 0 set even includes a rake. These sets do the job, but the spin is short and the layout is small: beyond a few nights a year, move up to a real wheel.

"Home Casino" American roulette 43 cm: light and portable

Black ABS wheel, aluminum spinner, double zero, 43 cm diameter, supplied with two 13 mm balls. At only 3.3 kg, this is the wheel that travels: home events, corporate parties, rental. It is also the only wheel in the range designed for American roulette: pair it with a layout that includes the 00 pocket.

Acajou French roulette wheels 45, 50 and 55 cm: the real casino wheel

This is the reference range for a serious home casino or a club. Solid mahogany frame, metal center, single zero, red and black pockets and a green zero true to French roulette standards, two 15 mm balls included. The metal center gives a long, even spin, and the weight of the wheel (about 7.7 kg for the 50 cm) keeps it stable on the table.

Acajou 50 cm French casino roulette wheel, single zero, metal center

  • 45 cm (height 7.5 cm): the most compact size, ideal for a living-room table or an "Eco" roulette table. Available in dark mahogany and in a light finish.
  • 50 cm (height 9.5 cm): the mid-size wheel, more visual presence, still easy to handle at home. Available in dark and light finishes.
  • 55 cm: the largest wheel in the standard range, for regular games and events where the wheel must be seen from across the room.

The giant 80 cm roulette wheel: professional equipment

An 80 cm mahogany wheel, available in single or double zero, supplied with 4 balls. Reserved for casinos, gaming rooms and event companies, it is made to pre-order: allow 4 to 6 months of production, or 3 to 4 weeks with air freight (surcharge applies). Order early if you have an opening date or an event.

Roulette balls: diameter matters

A ball gets lost, chipped or ends up in a guest's pocket. Always keep a spare, and stick to the diameter of the original ball: 13 mm for the Home Casino, 15 mm for the Acajou wheels. A ball that is too small bounces too much and can jump out of the wheel; a ball that is too large gets stuck between the pocket separators.

Our ivory-colored plastic balls come in 12, 15, 18, 20 and 22 mm, from €3.90 to €6.30 each. The larger diameters are designed for large wheels.

The roulette layout: French or English?

The layout shows the number grid from 0 to 36, the even-money bets, the dozens and the columns. There are two single-zero layouts:

  • French roulette layout: the even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, low/high) are placed on both sides of the grid. The croupier can work from the center, and players bet from both sides.
  • English roulette layout: all betting areas are on the same side, facing the players, with the croupier at the end of the layout. It is the most common layout for events, because it is played with color chips and speeds up the game.

Arabesque roulette (green, brown, black) 180 x 90 cm Neoprene jersey €109.90

The 130 x 80 cm size seats 6 to 8 players and fits on a dining table next to the wheel. The 180 x 90 cm gives more room for bets. Neoprene jersey is non-slip, rolls up without creasing and cleans with a sponge. For everything about materials and sizes, read our casino mats guide.

The roulette table: which model for which use?

A roulette table combines the layout and the space for the wheel. It holds the wheel in place, guides the players and instantly gives the look of a casino table.

Roulette chips: one color per player

In English and American roulette, each player receives a color of chips. The chips have no printed value: the croupier sets the value of the color when the player changes money. The result: bets on the layout can never be confused, even when ten players bet on the same number.

Our Dice and Suited roulette chips are made of ABS with a metal insert, packed in rolls of 25 chips (115 g per roll), and each comes in more than ten colors: white, red, green, black, blue, yellow, purple, pink, orange, gray, light blue, brown, and depending on the model light green, fuchsia or fluorescent yellow.

The item that makes the difference is the wheel. A mahogany wheel with a metal center lasts for years: it is the investment to prioritize, even if it means starting without a table.

Looking after your roulette equipment

  • The wheel: dust the bowl and pockets with a soft, dry cloth after each game. No household cleaners on the mahogany or the metal separators.
  • Level surface: always place the wheel on a perfectly flat surface. A tilted table distorts the ball's path and favors certain pockets.
  • Transport: carry the wheel flat, ball removed, wedged in a box or case. Never lift it by the central turret.
  • The layout: damp sponge for neoprene jersey, and store it rolled, never folded.
  • The chips: warm soapy water, rinse, dry flat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between French and English roulette?

Both are played on a single-zero wheel (37 pockets). French roulette uses a layout with even-money bets on both sides and value chips; English roulette uses a one-sided layout and color chips, one color per player, which makes the game faster.

What size of roulette wheel should I choose to play at home?

A 45 or 50 cm mahogany wheel with a metal center is the best compromise: long, even spin and reasonable footprint. The 45 cm fits the Eco roulette table; the 50 cm has more visual presence.

Do I need a different layout for American roulette?

Yes. American roulette has a double zero (00): the layout must include the 00 pocket. A single-zero layout with a double-zero wheel leaves one pocket that cannot be played.

What ball diameter for my roulette wheel?

Always replace the ball with one of the same diameter as the original: 15 mm for the Acajou wheels, 13 mm for the Home Casino wheel. Our balls come in 12, 15, 18, 20 and 22 mm.

How many roulette chips per player?

Allow 50 chips per player, i.e. 2 rolls of 25 in the same color. For a table of 8 players, plan 400 chips in 8 colors; for events or a club, 100 chips per color.

What is the lead time for the giant 80 cm roulette wheel?

The giant wheel is made to pre-order: 4 to 6 months of production, or 3 to 4 weeks with air freight (surcharge applies).

Can a roulette table be customized?

Yes. The 213 x 107 cm custom roulette table comes with a neoprene jersey layout printed with your logo and colors. The Arabesque table can also be customized on request.
